Periodontics
Periodontitis /pyorrhea/ is an inflammatory disease of the periodontium, which comprises of:- Gingiva /teeth gums/,
- Alveolar bone in which the tooth is set,
- Cement, which is the root surface,
- Periodontium /system of collagenous ligament that holds the tooth in the bone/.
It is a bacterial inflammation of the periodontium, which is often preceded by gum inflammation /gingivitis/. Human body reacts to the infection of paradont by creating antibodies causing the destruction of the connective tissue attached to the tooth and of the tooth bone bed.
The signs of a periodontal disease include: bleeding gums, later forming periodontal pockets, receding gums, teeth changing their position and inclination. This can eventually result in the loss of teeth. Periodontitis occurs primarily in middle and older age. The danger lies in the fact that its progress is usually painless.
Treatment of periodontitis consists in the removal of the dental microbial plaque and tartar deposited on the tooth root’s surface. In advanced stages of periodontal disease, there is surgical treatment, in which a doctor lifts the gums, then thoroughly cleans the surface of the tooth root under direct visual check.
While combating periodontitis, prevention is key - i.e. regular check-ups by a dentist, dental hygienist visits and excellent oral hygiene.
